Overview and Treatment Philosophy

Tulsa Counseling Services (TCS)

Established in 2003, TCS provides psychiatric as well as mental health and substance abuse counseling services.  All our clinicians are licensed in their respective fields, with combined decades of experience in counseling and psychiatry.

OptiMental

As TCS has evolved over the years, a need has been found to expand into more specialized areas outside the traditional realm of counseling.  These specialized services (OptiMental program) involve two components, the first being testing:  (qEEG "brain mapping", ADHD, cognitive, and concussion screening).  The second component involves "self regulation" or "mind-body" based treatment strategies including neurofeedback, biofeedback and stress management "deep states" training.

Website objectives

1)  Many of the Optimental services are highly specialized, sophisticated, complex and and not fully understood by the general public.  Our first objective is thus to define, clarify and facilitate understanding of the techniques used (see Services).

2)  Our second objective is to provide scientific  evidence regarding the effectiveness of these  strategies (Resources (References)) for specific disorders.   We take pride in that our services are state of the art and research-based.  For example, our ADHD testing components are shown by scientific studies to be the most accurate available, in line with current research.

3)  Our blog and social media links are designed to  keep you abreast of exciting new develop-ments in the field and offer a forum for the exchange of information and ideas (see Blog & News).

4)  The OptiMental orientation is holistic, "mind-body", self-regulation based.  The Resources section provides a comprehensive listing of wellness resources to promote a healthier lifestyle.

OptiMental Treatment Philosophy

The OptiMental treatment approach represents a growing trend in our society toward a more holistic, "mind-body" orientation.  This philosophy holds that each individual should play a part an active role not only in terms of fostering well-being, but in taking responsibility for and treating ill health.  Holistic approaches may include traditional medicine, but they certainly aren't totally dependent upon it.   An example involves the use of medication.  The OptiMental approach could be stated:

"Medication when necessary, but not necessarily medication"

The holistic model is in line with the present public attitude, and represents a radical departure from previous generations.  Heretofore, people tended to passively accept medical advice, envisioning their doctor as all knowing.  At present the "patient role" is changing as people become more aware, allowing them to take a more active role in medical decisions.  People now want to be an integral part of the treatment process, realizing that they can engender attitudes and health practices that leading to better health outcomes.

Mind-body, self regulation strategies are designed to help modify internal pressures and lifestyle practices which adversely affect health.  These interventions are highly useful adjuncts to conventional treatments, even for the most serious medical conditions.  They have been demonstrated to be highly effective 1) in terms of reducing health care costs.  In addition, self regulation techniques: 2) promote a healthier lifestyle, 3) empower people to take charge of factors affecting wellness, 4) are relatively inexpensive, and 5) are benign, meaning that they do not generate negative side effects which are always linked to invasive treatments such as reliance on medications.
